Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, born on July 5, 1995, is an Indian badminton player and one of India’s most successful sportspersons. She has achieved remarkable success in her career and has won medals at various prestigious tournaments, including the Olympics and the BWF circuit. Sindhu made history by becoming the first and only Indian to win the badminton World Championships, securing a gold medal in 2019. She is also the second individual athlete from India to win consecutive medals at the Olympic Games.
Sindhu reached a career-high world ranking of No. 2 in April 2017. She broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Rankings at the age of 17 in September 2012. With five medals at the BWF World Championships, Sindhu is only the second woman, after China’s Zhang Ning, to win five or more singles medals in the competition. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Sindhu became the first Indian badminton player to reach the Olympic final, winning the silver medal after a closely contested match against Spain’s Carolina Marín. She continued her success by winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, becoming the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals.
